The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is a leading patient-directed national organization focusing on depression and bipolar disorder. The goal of the organization, which has more than 1,000 support groups nationwide, is to provide hope, help, and support to improve the lives of people living with a mood disorder. More than 5 million people receive information and help each year. DBSA fosters an environment of understanding about the impact and management of depression by providing up-to-date, scientifically based tools and consumer-friendly information. Assisted by a 65-member Scientific Advisory Board, comprised of researchers and clinicians in the field of mood disorders, DBSA supports research to promote a more timely diagnosis, develop more effective and tolerable treatments, and discover a cure.
DBSA has worked with many people with depression and physicians around the country and believes a strong support network is critical for helping people stay on their treatment plan, get better, and live successful and productive lives with depression. DBSA's support groups serve about 70,000 people every year. These support groups provide an opportunity for people with depression to learn from their peers; motivation to follow their treatment plan; and a forum for mutual acceptance, understanding, and self-discovery. According to DBSA, a recent survey showed that 86 percent of support group members report that their group helped them stay with their treatment.
Through the Blueprint for Hope campaign, DBSA hopes to reinforce how a broad support network can help to treat depression and provide a better understanding of the resources that are available.
